India has been designated the world capital of “JUGAAD” that can be roughly translated into Innovations. Despite this the country ranks a lowly 66 on the Global Innovation Index. Former IT professional and co-founder of Lambent Technologies (now GlobalLogic India Pvt. Ltd.), Deepak Menaria was disturbed by this. He realized this was mainly because ideas rarely materialize into products or services in the country.

Menaria decided to do something to change this and came up with what he calls another ‘stupid’ choice by creating a firm called ‘Lemon Ideas’. The company’s mission statement “Innovation by EveryONETM” describes its philosophy well. The firm aims to capitalize and give leverage to such ideas, playing a facilitator to anybody with an idea worth considering.

“I call this a stupid idea because I have had many career shifts. From an IT professional, I jumped to the field of Human Resource Management when I headed the HR Operations of a national company that I ran from Nagpur itself. I left all of it for other venture, a not-for-profit organization working towards youth enrichment called ‘ONE Foundation’ and subsequently the i-Adda through which we make the youth aware about off-beat career options and motivate them to take up whatever they are passionate about as profession. But all these jumps were seen as unjustified and stupid moves by people around me, as I was giving up comfortable, lucrative jobs all the time”, said Menaria.

These shifts were made with the realization that the full potential of youth has never been leveraged in our country. “Youngsters are full of energy and all they require is a pinch of discipline, slight navigation and a little push to succeed. If we can provide them these things, we would be able to make right use of the intellectual capital at our disposal,” said Menaria. He prepared himself to the new role by doing a course on Innovations from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad.

While others criticize about the country’s future, Mr. Menaria takes the courage and passion and a will to contribute towards the improvement of the system rather than just stop at criticizing it. “India is the largest producer of lemons as well as ideas. Lemon symbolizes fresh ideas for us and one of our punchlines is ‘Make your own Lemonade’. This is especially important for our country at this juncture, as the present decade has been designated as the decade of innovations,” he said.

These Ideas need not come from specific group of people or professionals, though they would be among the primary targets. “It could be an uneducated person who comes up with a simple solution to problems bogging down many people. Our role will be to polish their ideas, study feasibility and connect these people with those who would help them convert it into a more tangible form,” said Menaria.

Lemon Ideas plans to work at four niche fronts. First would be Lemon Lab where an attempt would be made to create a synergy between academics and innovations for extra-ordinary results. Second would be Lemon Academy where individuals will be given a chance to experiment with their ideas, nurture their skills & creativity. Third is Lemon Green House where business ideas would be mentored, guided and shaped to grow to become a reality. More specifically people would be navigated during pre-start up whereas most of the ideas journey gets buried. Fourth would be a humble effort in using innovative ways to tackle social issues known as Lemon Plantation. Lemon Ideas is a one of a kind organization with a motto “Every idea deserves a chance” and they pledge to give this chance to all those who need it.
Lemon ideas specifically would focus on II tier cities to bring momentum in Innovation and as a first step would identify and select Institutions/Organizations for repute and credibility to partner with on mission Innovation.
